Brief History

Orchard Road before 1900
Originally nutmeg, fruit and pepper orchards before the turn of the 20th Century. Now - most popular shopping district in Singapore.

Known to the English as a 'well-shaded avenue', to the Chinese it was tang leng pa sat koi (Tanglin market street) due to good market bargains, and vaira kimadam (fakir's place) to the Tamils.

Once there, now gone...

Orchard Central - where the open-air car park used to be, widely known as 'Glutton's Square', popular among tourists and locals until it was shut down in 1978 with the introduction of food centres for hygiene control.
